Foreign Nationals (Warga Negara Asing or WNA) in Indonesia may, in principle, apply for an extension of their Stay Permit through Indonesia’s electronic immigration system. However, the procedures and requirements depend on the type of Stay Permit held and the circumstances of the relevant foreign national.
For companies, foreign investors, and parties handling immigration compliance, submitting an application online does not mean that the extension will be granted automatically. Immigration Officers retain the authority to examine the application, conduct verification, and grant or refuse the extension in accordance with the applicable regulations.
1. Visit Stay Permit: Online Extension
A Visit Stay Permit may generally be extended through the electronic immigration system, depending on the type of visa and the purpose of the foreign national’s stay in Indonesia.
This mechanism includes, among others, Visit Stay Permits derived from single-entry visit visas, multiple-entry visit visas, and Visa on Arrival. For certain categories, including foreign nationals subject to specific immigration approval requirements, approval from the Directorate General of Immigration may be required.
The extension period also depends on the applicable visa category and purpose of stay. Therefore, the availability of an online application facility does not mean that every Visit Stay Permit can be extended for the same period.
2. Limited Stay Permit (KITAS): Online Extension
A Limited Stay Permit (Izin Tinggal Terbatas or KITAS) may also be extended through the electronic immigration application.
For most categories, the application is submitted electronically through the https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/ system.
The extension remains subject to the applicable duration limits. Depending on the duration of the initial Limited Stay Permit, for foreign workers, a KITAS extension should ideally be assessed together with the underlying employment arrangements and foreign worker requirements. A valid KITAS does not, by itself, resolve discrepancies concerning employment, position, activities, or other regulatory requirements.
3. Permanent Stay Permit (KITAP): Extension and Five-Year Reporting
A Permanent Stay Permit (Izin Tinggal Tetap or KITAP) is generally granted for a period of five years and may be extended for an unlimited period as long as the Stay Permit has not been cancelled.
The extension follows the requirements and procedures applicable to a Permanent Stay Permit, including the submission of the existing Permanent Stay Permit documentation.
Although the application process is increasingly integrated with electronic immigration services, applicants should distinguish between online submission and the completion of subsequent administrative stages, which under certain circumstances may still require physical procedures or documents.
KITAP holders are also subject to periodic reporting obligations. Accordingly, KITAP compliance does not only concern the extension process, but also the administrative obligations applicable for as long as the Stay Permit is held.
4. Online Submission Does Not Mean Automatic Approval
The most important point for foreign nationals and companies is that electronic submission does not remove the substantive authority of Immigration Officers.
Immigration may examine the foreign national’s identity, immigration status, Sponsor, place of residence, purpose of stay, activities, and other relevant information. An application may also be refused if the applicant falls within the grounds for refusal under the applicable immigration regulations.
In addition, there is another procedure, namely biometric at the nearest immigration office. Once the application has been submitted through the system and verified by an Immigration Officer, the Immigration Officer will provide a schedule for the biometric process at the relevant local immigration office.
5. What Should Companies Check Before an Extension?
Before submitting an extension application, companies and Sponsors should review:
- the validity of the passport and Stay Permit;
- Sponsor information;
- the registered residential address;
- the purpose of stay and immigration status;
- position and employment activities, where relevant;
- work location and foreign worker arrangements;
- supporting documents; and
- any previous changes in circumstances that may not yet have been updated in the immigration records.
Identifying discrepancies before submission can help reduce potential issues during the immigration review process.
Conclusion
Foreign nationals may, in principle, apply for an extension of a Visit Stay Permit, Limited Stay Permit, or Permanent Stay Permit through Indonesia’s electronic immigration system, while still observing the requirements applicable to each category.
However, the key consideration is not only whether the application can be submitted online. The foreign national’s immigration status, supporting documents, and actual circumstances must remain consistent and in accordance with the applicable Indonesian regulatory framework.
